DISORDERLY PAIR

EARLY MORNING NOISE

A charge of disorderly behaviour, involving singing, shouting, and drinking in Terrace Gardens and disturbing the residents there at 2 a.m., on June 20, was brought against Daniel William Charlwood and Felix Stevenson in the Magistrate's Court today. Mr. J. H. Luxiord, S.M., was on the Bench.

Senior-Sergeant J. Dempsey said that before midnight on June 19 residents in Terrace Gardens were disturbed by men who were drinking out of bottles there. ■' About 2 a.m. one of the residents, Mr. Orange, was awakened from his sleep by the noise and went outside. The men were singing and shouting and using strong language. He asked them to desist, but they said he had better look out; they had just "cleaned up a Chow." ' Earlier in the evening, said Senior-Sergeant Dempsey, the men had' invaded a Chinese shop and had thrown an apple at the proprietor. Mr. Orange was incensed by their conduct and struck one of the men.

Charlwood had been before the Court before on a charge of disorderly behaviour, in which a billiard-room window had been broken. However, on this occasion, said the Senior-Ser-geant, Charlwood appeared to be trying to get his companion away, and next day he had sent an apology to one of the residents.

The defendants were convicted and fined £2 and costs.
