Wilen he motion picture based on tho hfe of CccU Rhodes wag last week, it was observed that one notable figure who was closely assoofjeiated with him was not mentioned He died while the picture was being shown—John Hays Hammond whose remarkable autobiography appeared last year. Hammond, a native or San Francisco, was educated at Yale and Freiburg. At the latter university he proposed to an American girl student, who replied that she would consider it if he won the 100-metre race at the university spoiis. He won it, set a record, and won two other events on the same day. His wife predeceased him by five years, In the early nineties Barney Barnato took Hammond to South Africa on a salary so generous that he becamo known as "Barney's White Elepliant." In less than a year he was associated closely with Rhodes He laid out the plan on which the development of the Rand mines was begun, and started the Robinson Deep which has now reached to a depth of 8500 feet. He took part in the Jameson Raid, and, with his companions fell into the Boer ambush. Hammond lojwas sentenced to death, and escaped on the payment of a heavy fine when the United States Government insisted that his life bo spared He was -i friend of Theodore Roosevelt personal advisor to Tail, and Special Envoy for the United States at the Court of Si Limes.
