WINTRY WEATHER
IMPROVEMENT DELAYED
Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to moderate southerly winds which later will freshen again. Weather dull and cold with intermittent rain, and possibly some hail showers. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for winds between south-west and south-east which will be moderate to strong. The weather will still be cold and changeable, with passing showers in most districts. Snow will fall on the ranges and hail in places. The weather should be fair, however, on the west coast of the South Island. A depression still extends from New Zealand in an easterly direction, but it is now much less intense than it was yesterday. Consequently by this morning the southerly winds had nearly everywhere decreased in force, but the weather has continued to remain cold, cloudy, and unsettled. Rain, mainly scattered and light to moderate, has. fallen in most districts. On the South Island ranges snow has fallen, and there have also been some light falls of snow in eastern and far southern parts of the South Island. Auckland's weather has continued to be cold, cloudy, and showery, with a moderate to fresh south-westerly wind. Yesterday's rainfall totalled five points. Wellington had a brief period of sunshine after midday yesterday, 1.6 hours being registered. But most of the day was dull and cold. A few light showers fell and there was a heavier one about 6.20 p.m. More frequent showers fell after midnight, the total ramfall up to 9 a.m. today being one of 16 points. A strong and squally southerly wind has gradually moderated since last night and it was very light this morning. Christchurch has experienced cold, changeable, and showery weather, but has had some brief periods of sunsliine. Light snow fell on the surrounding hills last night, but the weather this morning was finer with a gentle breeze from the west-south-west. The rainfall totalled six points, and there was a frost of nine degrees there last night. Cold, unsettled, and showery weather has continued in Dunedin, too, a moderate to fresh southerly wind prevailing. Conditions improved somewhat yesterday afternoon, but" some snow fell during the night and snow showers were still falling at 9 a.m. today, up to which hour the rainfall had been two points.
