MOTOR VEHICLES
BILL PASSED BY COUNCIL
With an amendment excluding certain areas in boroughs and town, districts from the speed limitation of 30 miles an hour, the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill was passed by the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon. ■
■ With a view to drawing attention to the danger from speeding motor-cars, the Hon. R. McCallum moved an .amendment to prohibit vehicles capable of travelling more than 35 miles an hour from using the highways. Mr. McCallum did not press his amendment, which he was content to lose on the voices.
Mr. McCallum moved a further amendment to restrict speed in populated areas to 25 miles per hour. - It : was pointed out by the Acting Leader' of the Council (the Hon. B. Martin) that the speed of 30 miles per hour was a maximum speed, and local bodies could make further restric-tions-if they'desired:
■ Mr. McCallum pressed his amendment, which" was defeated by 26 votes to 1.
Attention-to the loose wording of ,the Bill was :drawn by the Hon. W. Perry, who moved to delete the provision making it an offence for a person to drive without "reasonable consideration for other persons using the road, street or other place." Witte the deletion of the clause, the Bill would make it an offence for.anyone to drive without "due'care and attention" only. Mr. Perry contended that the wording of; the" clause was; vague, but his amendment was defeated by 17 votes to 9. . -'
