THE GOODWOOD CUP.
CECIL DEFEATS QUASHED
United Press Association—By Electric TeleGraph—Copyright. (Received July 31, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 30. On the third day of the Goodwood Meeting the following was the result of the GOODWOOD CUP, a sweepstakes with £1000 added; second £200, third £100; special weights, with penalties and allowances; about 2 miles 5 furlongs. Sir Abe Bailey's b h Cecil, by Foxlaw—Star of Blyth, by Polymelus, syrs, 9.6 1 Marshal Field's eh h Enfield, by • Winalot—Firecrest, syrs, 9.G ... 2 Lord Stanley's b m Quashed, by Obliterate—Verdict, 4yrs, 9.4 3 Nine started. Won by one and a half lengths, two lengths between second and third. Winner bred by owner, and trained by J. Lawson at Manton, Wiltshire.
Ascot Gold Cup winners have rarely been able to follow up the success by winning the Goodwood Cup in the same year, and Quashed, who was carrying the 91b penalty, yesterday joined the list of those who have failed. Last year Tiberius, who is also owned by Sir Abe Bailey, was the first horse since The White Knight in 1907 who could win the double, but it will be recalled that he scored only by half a head from the three-year-old Bendex in one of the most exciting finishes on record. Twelve months ago the only other starter was Cecil, who was in the race to make the pace for Tiberius. Later in the season Cecil improved in form to win the Caledonian Hunt Cup, 1 mile 7 furlongs, at the Royal Caledonian Hunt and Edinburgh Meeting, and the Newbury Autumn Cup, about 2 miles 1 furlong, a race incidentally that Enfield won the previous year. When he won at Newbury Cecil was described as "a queer-tempered horse who was, unfortunately for the others, found for once to be in a battling mood." From a photograph he looks to be a very'big horse. —"Rangatira."
