THE KING TO GO TO FRANCE
As Prince of Wales, King Edward approved the visit of British ex-ser-vicemen to Germany. As King he plans 16 go himself to the battlefields of France to unveil the memorial on Vimy Ridge to Canadians who fell in the Great War. Both these arc peace-making gestures, and need have no political meaning; in fact, it is stated that King Edward's visit to France to unveil the memorial is the result of a promise he made to the Canadian Government while Prince of Wales. Nevertheless, friendships can be strengthened by Royal visits. The King's sojourn, as Prince of Wales, in Vienna is remembered by Socialist and Monarchist alike, and by both favourably. The cablegram recalls that it will be the first time for years that a King of Britain has left his own country. The pre-War visits of King Edward to the Continent are foi^ gotten by this generation. Will they be renewed? The two Edwards already stand out in history as men of personality, to whom peoples of many races feel attracted. Since the War Kings are rare, and Kingly personality is even rarer. Its mission seems to lie in easing strains and healing breaches.
