ADMIRAL SIR CECIL THURSBY,

LONDON, May 28,

I The death has occurred of Admiral Sir Cecil Thursby, whose burly thick-' set figure and bulldog jaw will, be remembered by every Arizac whose, disembarkation he covered at Gaba Tepe. He was not only -a fight&ig sailor but also a first-class diplomat. Admiral Sir Cecil Tliursby was born in 1861 and entered the Navy in 1374; being. a midshipman on the Amethyst during her engagement with the Peruvian ship Huaicar. ;He served at Souakim in 1884-85 and at the Dardanelles during the Great War. being mentioned in dispatches, and was in charge of the .landing of the Australian and New Zealand forces on Gallipoli Peninsula. In. 1916 he received the command ■of thej British Adriatic Squadron, and in '1917 was Commander-in-Chief in the Eastern Mediterranean.; In the following year he became; commander of Coastguard and Reserves, and in' 1919-20, until he retired, he was . commander at, Plymouth. He was prompted Admiral in 1919. He was mr.de a K.C.B. for his services in the Mediterranean during the war, and a K.C.M.G. in 1916. He also held a number of foreign orders:
