FAR FROM HOME
A BEWILDERED YOUTH
Of all the passengers on the Makura, which arrived today from San Francisco, there was no one more wistful or bewildered than a Rarotongan boy of about 18 years of age. He is on his way to Whakatane to take up a position on a farm, and the first sight of Wellington rather awed him. In one hand he grasped a letter introducing him to chance travellers he would meet and asking them to direct him where necessary so he would reach his destination safely. In the other hand he had a piece of paper on which was drawn a rough (very rough) map of the North Island setting out the train routes he will be required to■ take to reach Whakatane. The towns he will touch at are also included in the diagram. Although obviously a little homesick, the boy is eagerly looking forward to his new life in New Zealand.
Also on the Makura was a Rarotongan girl, much older than the boy, who is on her way to a position in Napier. , ,
