LONDON, January 5.
The first weekly transatlantic air mail was inaugurated by an Air-France aeroplane deporting from Croydon for Santiago, via Toulouse. Dakar, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, a distance of 9365 miles, for which the schedule is four days. This will be the fastest longdistance line in the world.
The Atlantic will be flown in fourengined flying boats, evolved after lengthy, experiments.
The mail service is the first step to a passenger service, in which a seven-teen-ton flying boat, providing sleeping accommodation and crossing the Atlantic in fifteen hours, will be used. Miss Jean Batten sent a message wishing the undertaking good luck.
