MISHAP AT OAMARU
VERSATILE GREAT STAR
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, January 4,
Of the three jockeys who were involved in the accident in the High-' weight Handicap at Oamaru, D. O'Connor, riding Haeretonu, came off the worst. Two or three stitches were inserted in a nasty cut over his left eye, and after an hour or so he was walkins about, but he did not ride again during the afternoon. Kamal Pasha was not a runner on this account. W. Hogan, rider of Courtyard, who came down first, received a bad shaking, but W. Kitto, on Gold Boy, did not suffer much harm. The incident was attributed to Kin Tin Tin's coming over too soon on Courtyard, and F. E. Ingram was found guilty of careless, riding, thereby causing interference. Three months suspension was the punishment. The Surgeon performed at Oamaru according to his double victory display at Waikouaiti. In his races at these meetings he came from the middle of the field to win, instead of, as previously, being one of the leadThe privately-trained Trek is on the way to form again. She rushed to the lead three furlongs from home in the Waitaki Champion Hack Handicap at Oamaru, but she was soon passed by The Surgeon when they straightened up, and Superex, with a late run, nearly beat her for second. Taking the lead so far from home told on her in the straight, but she should be worth remembering in the immediate future. Great Star won all the way at Oamaru, as he did at Waikouaiti. He can still mix sprinting and staying well. Mary Pratt was back fifth on the rails coming for the straight in the Farewell Handicap at Oamaru, but a furlong from the post she received her chance and came tnrough to fight off Disguise and win nicely. She is a very useful hack. J. Mclnally was fined £1 at Oamaru for breaking riding engagements. The trouble appeared to lie in his accepting too many mounts and in not having a sufficient knowledge of the geography of the South Island, to which he is a stranger. While he was being subjected to examination as to which horse he had been engaged to ride in the President's Handicap the horses were held up for some time in the birdcage. He weighed out in High Glee's colours, then changed to Custodian's, and then later back to High Glee's, W. Cooper taking the mount on Custodian. To add to the youth's troubles High Glee pig-jumped while doing his preliminary and threw him.
