TROUBLE IN AMERICA

NEW YORK, December 31

The "New York Times" Washington correspondent reports a chaotic situation in West Coast shipping, in which radical unionists, led by Mr. T. Bridges, in a long controversy with the Shippers' Association, have reached a serious crisis with more than a possibiity of a general strike.

As a result the Federal Department of Labour has been requested to intervene, but a feasible approach to solving the difficulties is not yet apparent. The Bridges group is reported to have prepared an order for a general longshoremen's strike against cargoes originally loaded by non-union men. To counteract this shippers are believed to have prepared for a "finish fight" to smash all maritime unions.

Already striking longshoremen have held up 40 schooners of the Pacific lumber fleet, and a complete stoppage of the movement of lumber from that area threatens. »
