UNEMPLOYED AT HOME
AN IMPROVED POSITION
(Britlsli Official Wireless.)
RUGBY, December 30
The Ministry of Labour estimated that at December 16 there were approximately 10,599,000 insured persons aged from 16 to 64 in employment in Great Britain. This was 82,000 more than at November 25, and 340,000 more than a year before.
The number of unemployed persons on the registers at the same date totalled 1,868,565, comprising 1,585,990 wholly unemployed, 205,574 temporarily laid off, and 77,001 nominally in casual employment. The total was 49,997 fewer than at November 25 and 217,250 fewer than a year before.
There are several satisfactory features in the December returns. They reflect the usual seasonal changes, such as Christmas activity in distributive trades and hotel and boarding-house services, and less demand in certain manufacturing industries, which had completed their seasonal requirements.
