TOURIST TROPHY RACE
RECORD FOR COURSE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, January 1
Averaging nearly 55 miles on hour over a tortuous and gruelling 168 miles course, C. Goldberg, of Auckland, won the sixth annual New Zealand tourist trophy motor-cycle race at Ostend, .Waiheke Island, in the record time of 3hr 4min 38sec. The previous record, established in the last race by A. Bradley, of Nelson, was 3hr 7min 38sec, three minutes more than the new figure. Bradley was not among the competitors today, as he has retired from the sport.
Goldberg's mount was a Velocette, fitted with the special 500 ex. overhead camshaft motor used by Walter Rusk when he won the Ulster Grand Prix last year. Close on his heels over the whole distance was J. Dale (Rudge), who gained second place, finishing smin 7sec behind the winner. The unluckiest rider of the day was M. C. P. Jones (Excelsior J.A.P.), of Wellington, who put up splendid times during practice. His motor ran perfectly during the practice period, but in the first lap of the race he split his gearbox casing. Jones had been regarded as a likely winner at the event.
Third place was filled by O. L. Cox '350 c.c. Velocette), of Pukekohe, and W. Grey (Norton), of Rotorua, was fourth.
