CANTERBURY PARK

BLUE MOUNTAIN'S SUCCESS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

The Canterbury Park Trotting Club I was favoured with ideal conditions for the opening of the Summer Meeting. The Addington track was in great order and there was some excellent racing. A change was made in the betting arrangements, the totalisator operating on the win-and-plaee system, and. there was a large increase in the turnover. The only drawback in the proceedings was that the last race was more than an hour late. The totalisator figures were £26,066 10s, against £18,174 last year. The Introductory Handicap was not a good exhibtion of trotting, many of the competitors breaking at different stages, Esther led from Little Reta, Harvest Dillon, Lady Sonoma, and Sphinx for nine furlongs, when Little Reta and Harvest Dillon broke. Lady Sonoma then took charge and won easily. Sphinz outstayed Esther for second. Sister Mary finished strongly to beat Little Reta, Renegade, and Tyrone Lass for fourth. Ann Parrish, the favourite, went well for half the journey. Tyrone Lass showed a lot of speed but broke in the straight. Noble Prince, the favourite, broke at the start of the Railway Handicap. Directum was the early leader but De Soto headed him after two furlongs, with Ratloc, Great Thought, All Sunshine, and Ayr Lass all handy. Great Thought joined De Soto in the lead at the half-mile post, with All Sunshine heading the others. De Soto broke three furlongs from home, Great Thought going on from All Sunshine, with De Soto and Directum n«t at the entrance to the straight. De Soto finished well to beat Great Thought easily by two lengths. All Sunshine was three lengths away, just in front of Admiral Wrack, who came with a strong late run. De Soto is a smart pacer, liable to do a lot more winning. CANTERBURY HANDICAP. The Canterbury Handicap was a good race, with an exciting finish. Wild Guy tangled at the start and Sunny Morn was a trifle slow. Emilius Way led out but Vesuvius headed him after half a mile, Gold Tinge, Kingcraft, Wrecker, and Evicus following in that order, with Sir Guy and Blue Mountain next. The only change starting the last round was that Gold Tinge had taken second place. Emilius Way was in trouble along the back and three furlongs from home Vesuvius had Gold Tinge, Kingcraft, and Evicus in close attendance, with Blue Mountain moving up. Vesuvius retired when the straight was reached and Blue Mountain finished strongly to win by a short length from Evicus, who beat Kingcraft by a neck, with Gold Tinge another neck away. Sunny Morn and Wrecker were next. Blue Mountain, patiently driven, paced home very solidly. The Australian mare Evicus went a good race, as did Kingcraft. Gold Tinge was stopping in the last bit. C.^LANT KNIGHT FALLS. The American horse Gallant Knight was favourite for the Lyttelton Handicap, but when going well, at the end of five furlongs, he fell, through interference, due to a horse breaking in front of him. Silk Bonney and Navy Blue set the pace, with Trireme, Reylena, and Prince Roydbn handy, while Slippery Sam, Lady. Hannah, and Harlequin joined in after six furlongs. Lady Hannah and Harlequin took charge at the home turn. Trireme and Reylena following them to the straight. Harlequin was beaten a furlong from the post and Lady Hannah beat Trireme by a neck. Reylena was a good length away, with Prince Roydon and Harlequin close up. Lady Hannah has run several good races this season. King's Guard, after a lengthy absence from the race track, came back to win the Stewards' Handicap, in which he led all the way. After going half a mile he had Resound, Header, and Silk Coat in close attendance, with Mataunga, Germanicus, and Air Flow not far away. Starting on the last lap Air Flow joined King's Guard and Silk Coat in the lead. A little further on King's Guard and Air Flow drew away and had the finish to themselves, King's Guard having the measure of the American mare all the way. Ganton, driven by his veteran owner, W. R. Franks, trotted on solidly to be a moderate third, with Amonos next. Silk Coat was well placed for a mile and a quarter and then faded out. ISLINGTON AND TEMPLETON. The Islington Handicap provided a great finish, the positions changing several times in the straight. Margaret Bell was the early leader, Marie Celeste joining her after half a mile. Marie Celeste then took charge, Aristotle, Margaret Bell, and Editor following her along the back. Marie Celeste led Editor to the straight, with several others closing up. Marie Celeste dropped out in the last furlong. Guy Junior, then put in his claim but. just when he seemed to have

the race won Young Travis flashed up and won by nearly a length. Guy Junior, Editor, and Aristotle followed at neck intervals. Young Travis was a boom horse at one stage and there is no doubt he can go fast when in the mood. The favourite, Grand .Mogul, failed to begin properly. . When the field settled down in the Templeton Handicap, Doris Derby was showing the way to Bay Flier, Agility, and Sea Trail, while after a mile Sage King and Tricliff were handy. Bay Flier joined Doris Derby three furlongs from home. Bay Flier stayed on !to win easily by three lengths. Sea Trail and Tricliff challenged in the straight, Sea Trail beating Tricliff by a length, with Agility a length back. Doris Derby faded out badly. Bay Flier won like a good four-year-old. SUPERTAX DISPLAYS SPEED. Queen Author began best in the Au Revoir Handicap. Colonial Boy, Chancellor, and Craganour were soon hi close attendance, and after half a mile Cloudy Range, Prairie King, and Recess were next. Supertax moved up fast along the back, took the lead at the home turn, and won easily by two lengths from Chancellor. Ayernus, a length back, stalled off Kecess by a neck. Supertax has brilliant speed and will win more races. Results:— Introductory Handicap, £120; 3.43 class; IV- miles.—lo-10 Lady Sonoma. 24 (J. Bryce, juii.) 1; 6-7 Sphinx, 24, 2; 8-8 Esther, scr, 8.
