PICTON REGATTA

INTERESTING RACING

Although a cool southerly wind was blowing, the New Year's Day rowing regatta al Picton was as successful as in past years. A large crowd watched the racing, which was very keen. The wind' was blowing from the bow, and as a result times were not as good as they might have been. Picton were the most successful, winning the senior fours and four other events. Crews from Wellington, Blenheim. Wairau, and Arapawa also competed.

H. J. Luke (Wellington Rowing Club) won the single sculls, rowed over a mile and a half course, very easily. He set an excellent stroke and finished lengths ahead of C. Tarrant (Picton). P. Abbott (Petone) did not compete. T. Hegglun (Wairau) was third. Time, 13min 20 4-osec. Picton were unfortunate in being put out of the race in the maiden fours owing to one of the crew losing his slide. At this stage the crew were rowing remarkably well. Wairau had a comfortable win, Blenheim being nearly three lengths behind. Time, 7min 32 l-ssec. Crews were: Wairau, C. C. Blythe (str.), I. McCallum (3), T. McDonald (2), J. M. Bythell (bow), 1; Blenheim, R. Bright (str.), L. Workman (3), R. Holdaway (2), A. Guild 2; Picton, C. Tarrant (str.), J. Horrey (3), P. O'Flaherty (2), P. Perano (bow). 3. Star scratched. The course was one mile. Clinker boats were used.

There were only two entries in the lightweight fours, over one and a half miles. The race was keen and interesting, Picton beating Blenheim by a length and a half. The time was 11 mm 34 2-ssec. Crews were: Picton, L. Peek (str.), J. Black (3), C. Boese (2), H. Boese (bow), 1; Blenheim, I. R. Wintringham (str.), R. Bright (3), S. Woodhouse (2), R. Patchett (bow), 2.

There was a close finish in the junior pairs, rowed in clinker boats, Wellington just beating Star, with Arapawa third. Wairau and Blenheim were out of the race. Crews were: Wellington. W. McLean (str.), A. Green (bow), 1; Star, L. Hosking (str.). B. Webb (bow), 2; Arapawa, A. Aldridge (sir.), R. Keenan (bow), 3; Wairau, P. Daniels (str.), C. Millard (bow), and Blenheim, C. P. Hadfield (str.), J. Wintringham (bow), also started. Time, Bmin 34sec.

The junior welterweight fours was an interesting race. Picton, whose style was very impressive, beat Wellington by one and a half lengths. Wairau challenged Wellington for second place, but the local team got there. Blenheim and Star also competed. Time, 7min 33 l-ssec. Crews were: Picton. L. Perano (str.), A. Davies (3), J. A win by nearly four lengths was registered by Picton in the pernor fours, rowed over a two-mile course. Star led for over a mile and a quarter, but Picton overhauled them and went on to win comfortably. Wairau was third, and the time was 14min 10 4-ssec. Crews: Picton, R. Burns (str.), J.
