NEW OPERA HOUSE.
Jack London's story of the Yukon gold rush, "The Call of the Wild," heads the change of programme at the New Opera House. Clark Gable, Loretta Young, and Jack Oakie interpret the leading characters. "Call of the Wild" offers Clark Gable a real he-man role, and his work as Jack Thornton, the handsome, swashbuckling prospector, stands out as the finest of his career. Loretta Young, is believable and beautiful as Claire Blake, the sheltered young society woman who casts her lot with Thornton and his pal, Shorty Hoolihan, when her husband is lost in the Arctic wastes, and Jack Oakie is at his best as the wisecracking Hoolihan. The gulf between their worlds and their codes turns Claire and Thornton against each other at first. But on the long trail to the "lost claim" which both seek, their hatred turns to deep love. However, when they reach the claim site and find it richer than they had dared hope, their dreams of happiness crash with the sudden return of Claire's lost husband. Facing this test, Thornton is bigger than his "take-what-you-want" code and lets Claire go away with her husband.
