WYATT EARP

PROGRESS OF SEARCH

FOG, SNOW, AND SQUALLS*

I United I'rcb! Association— Hy Klei-trtc tele j utaiJli— Coiiyriiilit. j NEW YORK, December 30. ■ A North American Newspaper Alliance message from the Wyatt Earp says:—"The laying of a depot at Charcot Island by aeroplane now seems impossible. For three days the Wyatt Earp has loitered in this vicinity, but fogs, snow, and squalls continue and for the few minutes it was clear today sea swells were such that it was impossible to launch the aeroplane. "There are no signs of the northerly wind abating. In fact, we heard from the British expedition 250 miles northward that there is a northerly gale blowing there. We will wait here until tomorrow before proceeding to do more essential investigations in the neighbourhood of Ross Sea. On the way we will keep a sharp radio watch in the hope of hearing Ellsworth's .signals." A later message from the Wyatt Earp says:—"The New Year will flndj the Wyatt Earp well on her way to the Ross Sea, where, it is hoped, she willj oe joined by Ellsworth. All indications yesterday of continued bad weather were fulfilled today. We pushed well into the pack-ice but were unable to find any leads of smooth water, and, since it has been from the first more likely that Ellsworth is nearer the Bay of Whales than Charcot Island, it seems advisable to proceed to the Ross Sea | without delay. If Ellsworth is not at the Bay of Whales, we should have to return here anyway, and if the men reach Charcot Island there is no doubt that they can find a living indefinitely on the numerous seals and penguins."
