NEW VISCOUNTS,
Lord Hanworth, lately Master of the Rolls. Lord Trencharu", who has just retired from the position of Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
NEW BARONS.
Sir Arthur Shirley Bcnn. Sir James Gomer Berry. Sir Thomas Catto. Sir lan Macpherson.
In the general Honours List 34 knighthoods are conferred. New knights include four members of Parliament, also a number of distinguished workers in the academic and cultural fields. Among the latter are the viceChancellor of Liverpool University, Dr. Hetherington; Professor Harden, emeritus professor of bio-chemistry at London University; Dr. Percy Buck, Professor of Music at London University, who has been musical adviser to the London County Council; Mr. Humphrey Milford, of the Oxford University Press, and Professor Alfred Zimmern. Lieut.-Colonel F. C. Shelmerdine, Director-General of Civil Aviation, also becomes a knight.
A number of honours are conferred in connection with the centenary of the Great Western Railway. At the head of these is the chief accountant, Mr. Ralph Cope, who has been in the service of the company for 58 years. Mr. Walter Ernest Hargreaves is knighted for services, including advice given in connection with the scheme of Government guarantee which enabled work on the liner Queen Mary to be resumed, and Mr. James Norval in recognition of his work for housing and town planning.
Dr. John Dover Wilson, Professor of Literature at Edinburgh University, a distinguished educationist and authority on Shakespeare, is made a Companion of Honour.
The King has conferred the Royal Victorian Chain upon the Duke of Kent.
Many, appointments to and promotions in various orders of chivalry are announced. In the Royal Victorian Order the Duke of Buccleuch, brother of the Duchess of Gloucester, becomes a Knight Grand Cross. In the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George Sir Robert Clive, British Ambassador at Tokio, becomes a Knight Grand Cross, and Mr. Roland Campbell, Minister at Belgrade, and Mr. Hughes KnatchbullHugessen, Minister at Teheran, become Knights Commanders.
In the Order of the British Empire, Sir Sydney Barton, British Minister at Addis Ababa, becomes Knight Grand Cross, and Mr. A. W. Keown Boyd, Director-General of the European Department of the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, is appointed Knight Commander.
Many honours are conferred on women, including Miss Christabcl Pankhurst, for pioneer social and political work for women, who becomes Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and Miss Myra Hess, who is made Commander. of the same order for services to music.
Field-Marshall Chetwode is appointed to the Order of Merit. Mr. J. F. Marshall, honorary director of the British Mosquito Control Institute at Hayling Island, is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Miss Ethel Green, Lady Superintendent of Queen Alexandra's military nursing service for India, receives the Royal Red Cross in recognition of exceptional devotion and competency in nursing duties.
Women in the Honours List include Miss Olga Nethersole, the actress, honorary organiser of the People's League of Health, who is made a C.B.E.
The Foreign Office Honours List includes a C.M.G. for Mr. Reginald Leeper, Councillor at the Foreign Office, and a C.B. for Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C.
