COLLEGE BOXING

The parents and friends who filled the new hall at Rongotai College on Friday evening were treated to a firstclass display of schoolboy boxing. •In the first term every boy in,the school was taught the principles of the sport, and those who showed special aptitude were given further training in the second term. The result was that 80 well-trained boys, ranging in weight from G6lb to 1711b, entered for the tournament. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday the preliminaries were decided, and some fifty of these were necessary before the finals were reached. For these bouts Mr. P. Martyn Rennev was the referee, and Messrs. Thomas. Ashton, and Scotney were the judges. Many first-class bouts were witnessed, and the following, though losing, gave very sound displays:—J. Whelan, P. Whelan, B. Synnott, K. Ruby, J. Wsßll, and many others. For the finals Mr. Curtayne, of the Wellington Boxing Association, was in the ring, and'the assisting judges were Sergeant-Ma jor O'Leary and Mr. Scotney. Every bout was a good one, and clean, skilful boxing was the order of the evening. The results are as follows: — '■ Bantamweight.—B class: Norton-Tay-lor v. Child. Child gave a very plucky display against a taller and more aggressive opponent. Norton-Taylor was the winner. Middleweight.—B class: Hill v. Lobb. Although Hill took a good deal of punishment from his hard-hitting opponent, «he ran out the winner. Lightweight.—Barber v. Parkin. Both boys boxed very well and little separated them at the finish. Barber was the winner^ Mosquitoweight.—Hamelin, 661b, v. Sissons, 691b. This bout was very popular with the audience. Sissons hit harder than his opponent and so gained the decision. Featherweight.—Thomson v. Muir. Thomson did most of the leading, and his punches were hard and straight. Thomson was the winner. Bantamweight.—Class A: Sefton v. Turnbull. The boxing in this bout was particularly good, and very little separated the two participants. Sefton was the winner. Paperweight.—Class B: Miller v. Rassmussen. Miller gained a close decision in this bout. Rassmussen, handicapped by an injured thumb, put up a very plucky showing. Flyweight.—Gibson v. Grey. Gibson exploited a straight left to good advantage; but for most of the bout Grey's defence and counter work were skilful and effective. Gibson was the winner. Paperweight.—Class A: Jacobsen v. Smith. Good footwork, effective blocking, stopping, and side-stepping characterised this bout. Jacobsen's • display would have gained him the decision over most boys of his weight; but Smith carried one or two more guns, and so gained the decision. Welterweight.—Wall v. Richards: Good boxing, combined with hard hitting at a tremendous pace, made this bout a thriller. Richards received a bad blow■•inwthe eye and.was not permitted to continue. Wall was the winner. Middleweight—Class A: Trillo v. Mountjoy. Orthodox boxing, with neither, boy taking any risk, character-' ised this bout. Trillo was the winner. School Championship.—-Coveny v. McLennan. In this bouf Coveny was giving away- 421b, and it took all his skill to keep his opponent off. McLennan put up a' • first-class display, and is a goodi heavyweight in the making. Coveny is ■ the school champion for 1935. The Boxing Association's medal, for the most scientific display, was awarded to P. Smith, the winner of- the paperweight; the school medal, for the gamest display by a loser, to B. Synnott; and the boxing shield, for teams' aggregate, to the Trojan team (leader, B. Synnott). At the conclusion of the bouts, the principal,. Mr. F. Martyn. Re'nner, referred- in terms of appreciation to the training given to the boys by Messrs. J. A. Heron and D. Edwards, assisted by K. Coveny, and conveyed the school's thanks to Mr. Curtayne for his services as referee. .
