"One out of every five children in Scotland is born out of holy matrimony," said Major A. R. Haverfleld at the annual meeting of the Glasgow and«GallowayDiocesan Council. : Attacking what he described as the appalling immorality of Scotland, he added that the illegitimate births in Wigtown County per thousand, were 178.8 compared with the "highest English figure of 42. He estimated that 12 or 13 per, cent, of Scottish marriages were irregular, but were later regularised by Sheriff's warrant. Major Haverfleld blamed ignorance, combined w.ith the cinema and modern novels.
