RACING AT ROTORUA

OPENING DAY'S PROSPECTS

(Special from "Early Bird."')

AUCKLAND, This Day

1 The recent rains in the noi th have made the tracks much easier, and the Rotoma Racing Club's Annual Meeting tomorrow and on Monday promises to be very successful. Win-aiid-place betting operates.

It is likeJy that the field oE fourteen for the Rotorua Cup tomorrow will be reduced by stiirti7:g time, but there seems to be little doubt- that there 'will be sufficient runners to give' ample "scope for place betting. However, the issue appears to be pretty well confined to the horses veil up in the handicap, and anything below the first five in the 'Weights will be at long odds. Prince Colossus is left on top, and he will "only have to reproduce his second to Kiltowyn in the Takapuna Cup to be a strong possibility. He is one that will appreciate an easy turf. Lady Spyhas been racing only moderately up this way during the past several weeks, and she would appreciate a shorter distance. Sinking! Fund got.into some trouble in both his engagements at the Takapuna Meeting, -prior to which he had been galloping I brilliantly, and he is one of those that will take beating. Prolyxo and Psychologist are possibilities, but the others will have to improve considerably on their past efforts to..beat some of those mentioned.

Another fine field,, and one of better class, is liable to contest the sprint, the Tourist Handicap. There seems no reason to doubt, that Namakia will be favourite, for sho is very smart and will go a merry six furlongs on this turning coursei The stable will also be represented by Wait and See, >vho is also smart. . Coronis and Tradesman also have chances, especially if the latter strikes a heavy track. , The various other events have filled very well indeed, and they should produce keen contests. Form horses engaged tomorrow are the following:— Arawa Park Stakes.—Du Barry-Light Comedy bracket and Parquet. Pohutu Highweight.—Barn Dance, Valr pai, and Royal Dash. JVaimangu Stakes.—Whirling, Nahlin, and Astarth. Mokoia Hack.—Waihine Reihi, Prince Acre, and Dancing Lady. Rotoiua Cup.—Prince Colossus, Sinking Fund, and Lady Spy.
