SWISS 'DROWNED
BOY'S RESCUE EFFORT

AUCKLAND, February 7.
While bathing in a tidal creek at Otaua, near Waiuku, this afternoon, John Wirth, aged 42, single, a native of Switzerland, got into difficulties and was drowned. ;' ■
Two determined attempts to save Wirth were made by a boy, Raymond Sterger, aged 14. Wirth was.a heavy man, and, struggling violently, he pulled Sterger below the surface. The boy managed to fight his way blear and swam to the shore to get a rope. Returning a few minutes later with" a line, he found that Wirth'had sunk to the bottom, and although he-spent some time in diving he could find no trace of him: : -
The body was recovered three hours later. Wirth had been in New Zealand for the past nine' years, but.it'is thought that he had no relatives in the Dominion. . ;..
