SECONDARY SCHOOLS

AFTERNOON SESSIONS

LEFT TO PRINCIPALS

Boards controlling secondary schools have been advised by' the Minister of Education (the Hon. S. G. Smith) that the schools may be closed during the afternoons during February, but in the Wellington district it has nof , been thought advisable to make an order for the closing of the schools. The matter has been left; to the discretion of the principals, who will shorten the working hours if such a course is thought advisable. This will mean that in very hot weather pupils can be taken out of the classrooms for swimming lessons, and, during cooler periods they will be able to make progress with their studies.

It is considered ..that secondary school pupils will not suffer as a r&; suit of the hot weather to the same extent as the younger children, and where the buildings are of brick conditions are much cooler than in'some of the wooden primary schools. Advantage is also being taken to push ahead with outside work as much as possible.

The Wellington Boys' Colleges have not taken any action apart from providing ate much outside work as possible. The . Wellington Girls' College is working from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. at present,'and the-Wellington East Girls' College has reduced the afternoon session by an hour on hot days. The Wellington Technical College has not reduced the .school, hours, but special attention is being paid to swimming and outside, work during hot periods. -■.:.''
