DEFECTIVE SCALES
The statement that although the defendant's scales; were^ effective in- the direction of showing "an1 overweight his bread wa.s underweight was. made m the Magistrate's Court today by an inspector of 'weights and measures in the. prosecution/, of ; Sidney Schuster for having an incorrect counter- 'scale and weights and for: selling -and', delivering short-weight bread. The • inspector said -that he paidl a special visit to the Star Stores in Lambton Quay and witnessed! the delivery! of loaves bought from the defendant by the Star Stores. He weighed them and found nine 41b ■ loaves uhdeweighV while the: '21b loaves were all well up.in weight. He went to pee Schuster and found that his scales were broken and had not beeii verified 'since November,;. 1929. scales should have overweighed •'; and. the short weight must .have '■ been caused either by carelessness or by deliberate misuse. One 4lb' loaf >was. soz s,hort, and others were 3oz short. It was the first time the defendant had been proceeded against. ; i .Schuster's explanation to the Magistrate was inaudible. v '.■ ' •.' Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M.,.imposed a fine of £1 tin the charge jrelatipg -to the scales, and of £2' oh the •shortweight charge. He toldthe defendant that he- was doing that because of his unblemished record, butthat he would have, .to remedy the situation.
