TAMPERING WITH GAUGES
Some trouble has been caused in the Malvern County, Canterbury, by farmers tampering with the gauges on the water-races which control the .flow to their properties, states the "Press," Christchurch. At present the water is rationed • and the full supply is turned' down one race for thirty-six hours, allowing farmers to fill their ponds, and then into another race. By using :this supply carefully, they are-able-to carry on till the water is once again turned down their races.
. The gauges are regulated by rangers of the County Council, who see that every fanner dependent on this supply is treated as fairly as possible. Kecently, the' gauges, have been altered by farmers after the ranger has passed, and an unfair amount of water has been obtained by some men in the district. The main supply for the county is drawn from the Kowai River, about four miles above Springfield, and is brought down in two main , races— through Waddington and Charing Cross. .
The Malvern County Council has decided to issue warnings to farmers, and -to prosecute in any cases where farmers are found altering the gauges. . ; "
