The connections of Lia Fail, -nho fell in the Wahaioa Handicap at Matamata last Satmday and died within a few minute* aie veiy unlucky to lose such a usetui mare.

;As a -two-year-old Lia Fail had only one unplaced run, but last season, as a three-year-old she won twice in a dozen starts. .She appeared J; to,be, just reaching her best this .season, when prior to Saturday •,b1io:; had; s had six' starts for - three wins, two seconds, and a third. She won the Stanley Handicap at' Ellcrslie on ■November- 26; ■ the Flying "at Thames on January 10, "and the AVynyard Plate at Ellershe on January 26. J. W. Gathro tiMiued the mare at Matamata for Misses W. and N. Corbett. , She-was by Chief Kuler from-Miss Sphinx, a-Quin Abbey mare who raced for three seasons without ever gaining a placing.
