TALLOW FOR AMERICA

INCREASED PRICES

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, February 5. In addition to useful purchases of butter from New. Zealand, the United States has appeared as a strong buyer in the tallow market in the Dominion and in I Australia. Large quantities of tallow [have recently been bought on United btates account, and there was an exceptionally keen demand at the fortnightly sale held at Auckland today. Prices rose by about 2s per cwt, and best lines reached 20s per cwt, which is the highest price for some years. About six months ago best tallow was selling at 12s 6d per ewt. Owing to the dry weather the supplies of tallow available are smaller than usual. Kscessive killings of beef cattle iv the United States last year are stated to be responsible for the present demand for tallow.

Inquiries have also been received from New York for frozen beef, but the duty |of 4 cents per 1b is proving a handicap to business. A shipment of 400 quarters of frozen beef for New York will.be made by the Port Gisborne, which sails from Auckland tomorrow. However, as yet there is no indication of a worthwhile trade in meat being established. Buyers of butter on New Yovk account are showing interest in the shipment by the Opawa, and it is reported that already space for 5000 boxes has been booked. It is expected that there will be little difficulty in arranging a shipment of 30,000 boxes, which is the amount consigned to New York on the Port Gisborne. It is estimated that the total amount of New Zealand butter, already sold to New York is 80,000 boxes, or 2000 tons, 50,000 boxes being from New Zealand direct and 30,000 from London. .
