BRITAIN AND GERMANY
MISSION TO BERLIN
TRADE DEBT ADJUSTMENT
LONDON, October lo
Sir Leith Ross, chief economic adviser to the British Government, is returning to Berlin this week to negotiate a clearing agreement covering all AngloGerman trade. Ho will take a complete draft agreement for submission to Dr. H. G. 11. Schacht, Minister of Economics and president of the Reichsbank. It is anticipated that counter-proposals will prolong the discussion. The "Daily Telegraph's" diplomatic correspondent hints at a temporary agreement, and says that owing to the economic state of Germany it may be impossible to conclude an arrangement extending more than two months. Newspapers emphasise that it is the Government's view that arrangement for tho liquidation of old commercial debts must form part of any agreement reached with Germany, a British Official Wireless message states. These outstanding debts, a large part of which is owed to Lancashire and Yorkshire textile interests, aro estimated by tho Press to amount in all to about £ 2,000,000.
