EXHIBITION SITES
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In "The J>Dst" article on the Centenary Exhibition to be held at Wellington in 1940 it was stated that' only two sites arc favourably considered by the exhibition committee —Lyall Bay or Kilbirnic. Has the site occupied by the Winter Show Association been considered?' At the present time the area would bo far too small, but the chances of making this a wonderful site are very great. The following is suggested:—On the eastern or Hanson Street side adjoining the Showgrounds is a vacant piece of ground owned by the Education Board, about half-a-dozen private houses, and then a small area of city reserve reaching out to John Street. Purchase the houses and demolish them, extend the present buildings over a fair portion of the acquired area and Education Board property, and also put s handsome front, on the north side. What a commanding position this would make. On the south side the buildings could be extended at the base of the present sports ground, and if necessary right out on to the town belt at the back. On the west side Hutchinson Road divides the grounds from a large area of town belt. Close this road during the exhibition period (give temporary access to Vogeltown by a road to the south -end of Hanson Street) and use tho town belt as grounds. A sports ground is already provided. A permanent, pavilion could be built out over the road allowing future traffic to pass underneath. All of this would no doubt bo fairly costly, but in view of the large amount nlreadj7 sunk in the present grounds and buildings, and the permanent nature of a large part of the improvements, the selection of this site would be justified. —I am, etc., ADVANCE.
