LOTTERIES

"FOSTERING AN EVIL"

On the motion of Dr. J. J. North, the following resolution against gambling was adopted unanimously by the Baptist Union of New Zealand, now in conference in Wellington:—

"The assembly is convinced that the economic ills under which society groans are largely occasioned by the thirst for unearned money. The assembly believes that there is an urgent necessity for the establishment of a social code of honour that will make it a dishonourable thing to make money without giving value for it. Tlio assembly further believes that the establishment of such a code is impeded by lotteries and by gambling generally, such as Government licences. The assembly further believes that the newspapers, by extending free publicity to results of legal and illegal lotteries, arc fostering an evil which is a direct threat, to national well-being."
