STEADILY MOUNTING

OCTOBER'S RAINFALL

I October, as a rule, is not a particui larly wet month, in Wellington, the average rainfall totalling 3.41 inches, ! and the number of days with rain being ; 14. But the present October seems to bo out to compete with records as far ,as wetness is coucerned. Tho month i started with a, deluge to make up for September's deficiency in rain, and since . then, although less than half tho month has elapsed, there have been two wet i spells, so that the month's rainfall had ; already amounted by 9 a.m. today to • 5.88 inches, or 2.47 inches more than ■ the average for tho whole month. The ■ wettest October on record was in 1904, when 12.9 inches of rain wero recorded, and tho driest in 1894 when the fall was only 0.42 inches. Ellin fell on 17 days in that very wet October of .1904, the maximum fall in one day being no less than 3.50 inches. The very light rainfall of the dry October in 1894 was spread over nine days. However wet the present October may have been so far, it has still a long way to go before it beats 1904's record, but at the present rate of progress it will not bo far short. The present month's rainfall is tabulated below and is calculated for the twenty-four hours ending at 9 a.m. on tho dates mentioned. October 1 .... 223 point.-.
