PRICE OF BREAD

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Your correspondent, "Hound," dealing with the price of bread in various countries, stated that bread in England was sold at 8d per quartern of 31b, thus making out that England had changed the weight of a quartern loaf from 41b to 31b, thus misleading your roaders in the belief that they are paying less for bread in New Zealand when, they pay sjSd for a 21b loaf. In England, as in other countries, broad is, and always has been, sold by weight— ■lib per quartern; and, further, it is punishable by Jaw to pass it over the counter without weighing should it be found of short, weight,- half-quartern 21b, quartern 41b, thus making broad in New Zealand lid against bread in England at Bd. As' the natno of the correspondent implies that ho is :i server of bread, I presume ho is trying to make out a case for a highor charge in Now Zealand. Further, I would say if his other figures on wheat and pigs aro as accurate as those dealing with bread, then there can bo very little reliance placed on anything he writes.— I am, ctn.,
