B. M. SILK CHAMPION

PHENOMENAL FINAL RUN

MATCH WITH MORTLAND

WAXGAXUI, October 13.

After a keen contest, the Wangamii player B. M. Silk won the final oi the KenZealand amateur golf championship, ii ami i.

At the turn both in the morning and in the afternoon the pair were all square, b'.n Silk put iv a phenomenal run from the 27th hole and won five holes in succession, the match ending on the 32nd green. The journey out in the afternoon provided an interesting tussle, Silk going out in 30 and Mortland in 38. After they had turned for home all square, Silk, put in a magnificent run of 34344, taking each of five holes and winning the match. In the latter part of the journey Silk played more confidently with his irons, and his figures could easily have been better, if several long putts which missed by the narrowest of margins had fallen in. The 19th was halved ia bogey 4'a. but Mortland squared the match at the 20th by making a fine recovery from a bunker and sinking a good putt for a win in 4. The next two holes were halved in the regulation 4's. although Mortland had to make a second attempt to get up the hill at the Dress Circle. Silk took th>? lead again at the short hole, the 23rd. where Mortland failed to find the green with his tee shot. The match was squared once more at the 27th, Mortland playing a beautiful iron second on to the green and Silk playing his third across a bunker and failing with a long putt. For the second time the pair turned for home nil square, but Silk proceeded to put the i?sue beyond doubt by winning the next five ii;

a row, the match finishing at the 32ml hole, where Silk sunk v 10-foot putt for .i 4.

At the conclusion ot the match Silli was chaired by boys of his old school the AVanganui Collegeiate School.

The longest individual drive of the .tournament was made by A. Murray, 273 yards, and tho best agregate of two drives was put. up by A. Guy, 542 yards.
