ROWING
REDDING SHIELD
SATURDAY'S CONTEST
PETONE WIN AGAIN
With the destination of the Redding Shield doubtful until the last race had been rowed the regatta for the trophy on Saturday afternoon provided some excellent competition. Once again the Petone Club won the shield, Wellington being placed second, and Star third. With three firsts and three seconds the Petone crews gained a convincing victory, but it was only by securing both first and second places in the closing event —the senior pairs—that they put their opponents out of the running. For two consecutive Saturdays the contest had had to be postponed on account of rough weather, and again last Saturday conditions were not all that they might have been. The regatta was rowed on the Petone course in a strong off-shore wind which swung the boats considerably. The course was one of approximately a quarter of a mile along the Petone foreshore, finishing in front of the clubhouse. Five points were given for a first place and two for a second. They were gained as follows:— Petone. Star. Wgtn. Senior double sculls . — 5 2 Maiden fours 2 — 5 Senior fours 5 — 2 Junior fours 2 5 — Youths' fours 5 — 2 Senior pairs 7 — — 21 10 11 Fetone have now won the Redding Shield eight times, Wellington five times, and Star once.
