CHALLENGE TO CHEESE TRADE.
An encouraging improvement in the current season's shipments of Australian cheese to the United Kingdom, as well as to other countries, is indicated in a statement by the Federal Department of Commerce. Details of the quantities exported from July 1 to September 15 last, as compared with the corresponding totals for 1933, are:—To United Kingdom, 670 tons; other countries, 90; total, 760 tons. For the corresponding period of last year shipments were:—To United Kingdom, 240 tons; other countries, 80; total, 321 tons.
The quantity of cheese sent overseas from Australia during the whole of 1033---3-31 was 4600 tons, including 4200 tons to the United Kingdom. This total was nearly 1000 tons below that of 1932-33. Commenting on the above figures the Commonwealth Supervisor of Dairy Exports (Mr. P. J. Carroll) said he was pleased to observe that manufacturers were paying increasing attention to the possii bilities for Australian cheese on the British market. Other countries, especially New Zealand, had acquired a share in this trade far in excess of Australia's contribution, and there was no reason why this position should not be altered to our advantage.
