EIGA, October 12,
Firemen who wore called to extinguish a fire at the summer residence of Archbishop Johan, Primate of the Bussian Orthodox Church, found a body bearing knife wounds which had been soaked in petrol and set on fire. The body was eventually recognised by the teeth as that of the Archbishop.
Clues suggest that four assassins were implicated. It is suspected that tho murder is an act of vengeance in connection with a dispute between the Primate and some of the bishops. The Archbishop was to have given evidence in court today against members of the congregation and priests for embezzling cathedral funds.
Archbishop Johan was previously in Russia, where the Soviet condemned him to death in 1921, but his release was secured by the Latvian authorities.
