MAMAKU MILL
JOBS FOUND FOR THE MEN
A statement that tho men employed at the Mamaku sawmill, which has been closed, down by the Railway Dcpartmont, had been found jobs clsewhero was made by tho Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) in tho Houso'of Representatives yesterday afternoon.
The .question was raised by tho Leader of tho Opposition (Mr. M. J. Savage), who asked whether any provision had been mado for the men employed at the mill, or whether anything had been done to work the mill on a co-operative basis. Mr. Forbes'replied that the majority of the men who had been displaced had been found employment elsewhere. The position would be reviewed in six months' time. There had been a suggeston that the mill should be run on a cooperative basis, and a man had been prepared to finance the scheme for the purposo of keeping the men in work, but when tho details of tho Bcheme were investigated, it was found that he would lose a great deal of money, and it was not thought right that he should.be asked to carry the burden.
