ATLANTIC GALES
A LINER BATTERED
When the Anchor liner Cameronia berthed at Glasgow at the- end of a voyage from New York late in August a thrilling tale was told of her experiences during a severe Atlantic storm, which delayed her for 24 hours, says a London paper.
No fewer than 30 passengers were injured, and a seaman, Archibald MacDonald, aged 24, of Glasgow, was lost overboard. Ho was working at one of the davits when tho crew were at boat drill, and ho apparently slipped and fell into the soa.
The Cameronia stood by for two hours whilo a lifeboat search was made. MacDoriald's body was later recovered.
For two days after the galo struck the Cameronia she battled against hugo seas and a wind which is stated to have attained 70 miles an hour. According to some of the passengers, the seas broke on to the promenade deck 60 feet above the water line.
Serious damage was done when the ship rolled heavily twice as enormous waves struck her. In the dining-room people were thrown from their chairs, tables were overturned, and glass and china smashed. Passengers in other public rooms were thrown about. One of the most seriously .injured was Mr. William Bitch, who was travelling to Glasgow to visit, his mother after an absence of 21 years. His left arm was brolcen, and he received rib injuries.
Another -passenger standing at the foot of a flight of steps was thrown up trie steps when the ship rolled, and alighted on his feet. •
