BABY'S JUMPER
Materials.—Two loz balls of 3-ply wool. One pair of No. 12 and No. 10 knitting needles. A fine crochet hook. Three tiny buttons and three-quarters of a yard of narrow ribbon. Measurements. —Width ajl round at underarms, 20in. Length from shoulder to lower edge, lOin. Length of sleeve with cuff turned up, 7^in. The Back.—Using No. 12 needles, cast on 78 stitches. Proceed to work in rib of k 1, n 1, for one inch. Change to No. 10 needles and work in garter stitch (knit every row) Tor six rows. Now work in pattern as tollows:—lst row: Knit. 2nd row: Xl, k 2 tog., * wool forward, k 1, k 2 tog., repeat from • to lastv three stitches, wool forward, K3. 3rd row: Knit. 4th row: Purl. Repeat these four rows of' pattern twice, then work in garter stitch for sis rows. Now work in stocking stitch until ■ the work, measures 8V- inches from the beginning, ending with a purl row. Shape for Armholes: Cast off three stitches at the beginning of the next two rows and k 2 tog. at eacn end of the needle in the next and every alternate row three times. Work without shaping until the nrmholes measure four inches from (he beginning, ending with a purl row. Next row: X 21, cast off 24, it 21. Leave these stitches on a spare needle to be grafted. ' The Front. —Using No. 12 needles, cast on 78 stitches. Work to directions given for the back until the armholes measure one Inch, ending with a purl row. Now Make Front Opening.—lst row: X 32, cast off 2, k 32. Continue to work in stocking stitch on these 32 stitches without shaping for two inches, ending with a purl row. Shape for Neck.—Cast on* eight stitches at the beginning of the next row and decrease once at neck edge every alternate row three times. Now work without shaping until the iirmhole measures i% inches. Leave these stitches on a spare needle for grafting. Return to tlie other 32 stitches and work to directions given for the first side, only commence to decrease .or neck at the beginning of a purl row. Now Graft tha Shoulder Stitches as follows: Thread wool through a wool needle, then place the two needles containing the 21 stitches for shoulder, of the front and back, together, with the right side of work outside.
Hold your work so as to have the end of wool at back of work. Now pass the wool
needle through the first loop of the front needle, purlways, but do not slip the loop off tho needle, then pass the wool needle through the first loop of the back needle, knltways, but do not slip the loop oil the needle. • Slip the first loop off the front needle, knltways, but keep the loop on the wool needle until the next loop is worked, pass the wool needle through the second loop as If to purl, but do not slip off the knitting; needle. Now slip the first loop off the back needle, purlways, but keep the loop on the wool needle, pass. the wool needle through tbf second loop, knltways, but do nnt slip tne loop oft the knitting needle, repeat from until nil the loops or stitches are worked off. Sleeves.—Using No. 10 needle«. knit up 66 stitches around the armhole edge, with the right side of work facing you. Work In, stocking stitch, decreasing one stitch at eacn end of the needle, every Bth row, until 54 stitches remain. Now work in garter stitches for six rows, then work In pattern as Riven for the bark for 12 rows. Change to garter stitch, again and work for six rows, decreasing in the last row as follows: * k T. k l tog., repeat from •to end of row. Change to No. 12 needles and work in rib of k 1. P 1. tor one inch, then work in garter stitch for one inch Cast off loosely. Work the othei sleeve in the same manner. To Make up Jumper.—Press carefully on the wrong side with hot . Iron and damp clnm. Sew up side and sleeve seams. Turn garter stitch cuff bnck. Now using croche hook, work, round the edge of front opening Hi double crochot and mnko three loons for buttonholes. Sew buttons opposite. Work round neck as follows: Join In wool at neck edge, make 4 chain. Ist round: • 1 treble. 2 chain repeat from *to end of ro.md Fasten off neatly. Thread ribbon through holes at neck.
