CHURCH AND WAR
BAPTIST UNION DISCUSSION
Further discussion on the attitude of the Church to war took place at the annual conference of . the Mew Zealand Baptist Union yesterday afternoon. In moving a resolution that the liaptist Union declare its absolute opposition to war, as being altogether incompatible with the spirit, teaching, and example of our Lord Jesus Christ (the resolution was published in "The Post" yesterday), the Rev. L. A. North said that there now existed a revulsion from the whole idea o£ nation throwing itself against nation in war. If war was against the spirit and teaching of Christ, how could Christian men and women attempt to justify war on any grounds?
The Rev. J. C. Maeky (Nelson) remarked that it was all very well for members of the- assembly to sit there in smug security and pass general resolutions about war —resolutions which might hamper the Government in respect to taking reasonable measures of defence. He thought the wording of the motion should be carefully considered.
After some further discussion, the following committee was appointed to draft a resolution for submission to the assembly: The Revs. J. Laird, J. J. North, J. C. Mac-Icy, and Mr. W. J, Bardsley.
