"MERRIE ENGLAND."
The box plan for the Royal Wellington Choral Union's second "concert of the 1934 season will open at the D.I.C. on Monday, at 9 o'clock. The major portion of the programme will"be .Sir Edward German's "Merrie England," an opera which has not previously been sung by the Choral Union. It has some very popular music in it, and was staged a few years ago under the J. C. Williamson management. The first portion of the' programme will consist of a choral fantasia of Wagner's "Meistersinger," to be followed by an item called "Madame Noy," to be sung by Miss Zell O'Kane, with a rather unusual accompaniment of flute, clarinet, bassoon, harp, viola, and double bass. The composer of this unique number is Mr. Arthur Bliss, this being the first presentation in the Dominion. The first movement in R. Vaughan Williams's "A Sea Symphony" will conclude the first part of the programme. The performance is to take place at the Town Hall next Thursday evening, under the direction of Mr. Stanley Oliver. A full rehearsal will take place on Monday next, at 7.45, in St. John's Schoolroom, Dixon Street.
