REPORTS AND RETURNS

Interesting possibilities in the direction of mining development in Waihi have been opened up by the action of the Metals Trust, Auckland, states "The Star," in securing an area of 100 acres in the. northern end of the town for the purpose of prospecting, and which embraces a fairly large portion of the old Waihi Keefs Consolidated property. This area is directly on the course of the Waihi reef system, which, of course, includes such, important lodes as the Martha and Empire, and is situated on the north-east side of what is known as the eastern fault. The openingup of a new discovery in this part of the field would prove of immense importance to the district generally, and probably lead to further development ahead. There is a great advantage in having a shaft already on the property of over 1000 ft deep, and the Government reports show that the shaft had entered the lode-bearing series of Kapanga rocks. Years ago the intention was to drive east and west with a view to intersecting the Martha and Empire reefs, but little driving was done owing to difficulties met with in the matter of finance, caused principally by the conditions governing mining at the time of the war period.
