Solid preparation for the Melbourne Centenary Regatta Grand Challenge Cup on November 3 has been made by the Union (Wanganui) Boat Club's eight-oar crew, which is to leave Auckland on Thursday next by the Monowai for Sydney, accompanied by P. Abbott (Potone) and B. S. Smith (Waitemata). On September 30 the Union crew took their first fast spin over a mile, showing up very well and finishing in good trim. The Grand Challenge race will be. rowed over a course of a mile and 200 yards; it is anticipated that twelve ■crews at least will compete, which will mean that the winning crew will have to contest' three gruelling races over the distance before taking the trophy. The Otago Association* has decided to protest to the New Zealand Council regarding its contribution of £50 to the Union Rowing Club's eight for the Melbourne Centenary Regatta. It was pointed out that two years ago the council was not able to find money to purchase an eight-oar boat for the East Coast Association. •' v
