STEEPLE ROCK
NEW BEACON
SOON TO BE LIT
The new light tower which was erected near Steeple Rock, off Seatoun, some months ago is to bo brought into operation on October 23. The red light, which is to act as a guide for ships entering and leaving Wellington, was mounted recently by the floating crane Hikitia, but is not yet ready for service. A temporary white light is at present being shown near the Steeple Rock.
The now beacon, an occulting red light, will flash svery second as follows: Light o.3see, eclipse o.7sec. Its elevation above high tide will be 23ft. Tho light will be seen from 176deg, through south, to 286deg, and will be visible from a distance of seven miles. The beacon is to be painted whito, with a broad horizontal black band.
■ The installation of this new beacon will greatly facilitate navigation through the Wellington Harbour entrance, and will satisfy a long-felt want. Both for ships entering and leaving the port the light should prove a considerable asset, especially in bad' weather.
