EPIGRAM BRILLIANT

NEARLY A TRACK RECORD

The Trentham trainer J. McLaughlin, in a note received by the latest mail, mentions that .Epigram, whom he owns himself and who will be racing in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield tomorrow, is a greatly-improved horse since he arrived in Victoria, and his two successes to date certainly go to show that the opinion is not lacking in substantial material support. He adds that Epigram will hold his own in some of the important events during the Centenary racing carnival. _ : McLaughlin encloses a clipping revealing how brilliantly Epigram has.been working. In recording the gallops at Caulfield last Tuesday week the Press' excerpt toplines Epigram, and goes on to say:—

"The New Zealand horse Epigram, who has won. at his last two starts, gave a brilliant exhibition of galloping at Caulfield this morning,.covering seven furlongs in lmin 27% sec, which was just outside Parkwood's track record. Carrying the lightweight H. Mornement, he jumped off at the seven-furlong post on the steeplechase grass, and, after running the first two.in 25sec and three in 36sec, he was joined" by Journey's End. The half-mile was left behind in the smart time of 4SV£sec, and the five in lmin lsec, and with a strong wind against him over the last two Epigram finished well to record lmin 27% sec for the journey. It was one of the best gallops ever seen at Caulfield, and just a little outside the track record standing to the credit of the brilliant Parkwood."

The other seven-furlong, gallops on this track the game morning were:—Queen Helen and 'Cape Lilock, lmin '32sec, four in 51%8ee,' five in; lmin 4Usec, six in lniin 17%secj ■ Aliange, lmin 33% eec; Heroic Prince :and-Three'Pips, lmin 35sec; , St. Valorey. lmin 369isec; and Waltzing Lily strode. ■ ■ ■'.
