UNBEATABLE GOLF
MIRAMAR LADIES' -TOURNEY
MISS J. HORNABROOK,
CHAMPION
Following.'1 her crashing victory over Miss Barns-Graham in the .semi-final in the morning, Miss J. Hornabrqok, in the final of the Miramar ladies', open championship yesterday afternoon, treated the steady Miss E. Hanson very much the same, except that the latter made a determined effort when her opponent was dormy 4,, narrowly averting' defeat 5 and 4 by sinking a twenty-footer for a half in 3, winning the fifteenth, where Miss Hornabrook missed a three-footer for a wjn, and finishing a plucky light with a. half to lose 3 and-2. It was a remarkably fine display of golf by the young Masterton player, whose style somewhat resembles that of her brother, J. P. Hornabrook. She' is a hitter rather than a stylist, and gets a tremendous length, whereas Miss Hanson is a slight, effortless stylist. Yesterday afternoon Miss Hornabrook made no - errors in direction, . and her approaches and putting left little to be desired. Mis.s Hanson was in the uncomfortable position of always .playing the odd,"due to the length of her opponent's fairway work, and. she stood up to the ordeal remarkably well. . Miss Hornabrook was just off the.first gi'ccu iv 2, but Miss Hanson got her half in 5. The Miramar player found the bunker at the second with her . second shot, while Miss HornabrOok's fine approach was on the green. .Miss Hanson played a fine shot to within jmtting distance, but Miss Hornabrook ran down a 1 thirty-footer" for a 3 at this 5 bogey hole, and was J. up. She Wc.j four 'feet from the pin in 3 at the 431-yard ; third, and took: it in 5. Miss Hanson missed a three-footer for a win in 3 at the fourth, and Miss Hornabrook missed a five-footer for a win in 3 at the fifth. The sixth was halved in'useful,3's. At the 390-yard seventh, Miss Hornabrook. was well up the fairway in two strong shots, and ran over the hole for a 4, taking the hole in 5 to 6, Mi.ss Hanson having miss-hit her second. At the eighth Miss Hornabrook's accuracy from the tee failed for the first time, her sliced ball coming to' rest.on the thirteenth fairway. Her long second was a mite ton strong, and just trickled into the thick grass down the lip of the bunker. Miss Hanson's two nice shots put her on the green, and she took the hole in 4to 5. Miss Hornabrook, however, was on the ninth green in 2, and down in 4, turning 3 up, having gone out in the remarkably good figures, for a final, of 38 td Miss Hanson's 41.. The tenth was halved .in s's. Miss Hornabrook pushed her drive out at the eleventh, and found a poor lie, her second finishing short to the right of the green. Miss Hanson got two good shots, and was down in sto 6. A perEee't iron tee shot at the twelfth, left Miss Hornabrook with a six-foot putt for a 2. which she did not sink, and, Miss Hanson missing a short one for her half in 3, Miss Hornabrook was 3 up again, and taking tho thirteenth in 4, ■ was.'4 up and 5 ta go.' It looked like f.he-end'of the pnme, ,at the next, when Miss Hanson sliced into the rough, and Miss Hornabrook was on tho green, but the Miramar player played back well, and sank a fifteen-footer for her half in 3. As in the, morning, Miss Hornabrook was. well: '.hraiigli the Gap with her drive, but this.-time missed thebunker, and was on. the back of' the green in 2, and Miss Hanson, playing two. beautiful shots,, lay in (ho same position. . It seemed as though a half,, and the . end of the'match,, was certain, but Miss Hornabrook. niiss'ed.'.a three-footer for her half in 4, and they went on. Miss Hornnbrook was on the ".-sixteenth in 2, but missed her nine-footor for a. 3, ; . and missed the return, Miss Hanson,'who waa on in 3 with a beautiful approach, getting her half in 5. Each took 31 for the return holes. A gnllovy of over 100 thoroughly en-> joyed some fine golf. The Miramar Handicap was won by Mrs. Baillie. who beat Mrs. W. D. McCarthy 4 and 2. .. .. /.' ■,•■'■ ■: . The championship .'foursomes were won by 'Mrs. 'Weston and Miss. .Ward with the gross scoreof 85.
