LYALL BAY LIBEAEY
DISTRICT TO RAISE FUNDS
Eesidents of Lyall Bay met in Ockenden's Hall last evening to discuss further the proposal to establish a branch library, a development made possible by the offer of Mr. Ockenden to grant the use of the hall for library purposes free for two years and thereafter at a nominal rental. Mr. J. H. Burgoyne Thomas, president of the district association, was in the chair. A letter received by the secretary of the association from the Town Clerk stated that the council was favourable to the establishment of the branch library provided that a satisfactory contribution was made by the association towards the.expenses which would bo involved. In tho meantime, the Town Clerk stated, the council could take no further action in regard to tho establishment of the library, and the hall would therefore be available to the association for the holding of entertainments, etc., to raise funds for the purpose. Mr. 11. M. Harris reported upon a deputation which recently waited upon the libraries committee, and stated that the representations had beenwell received. He undertook to organise a canvass of the district for members and funds.
Various means of raising funds were discussed, including the holding' of an art union under permission from the Department of Internal Affairs. Mr. B. AY. Olson agreed to take this in hand.
The meeting was generally enthusiastic, and residents are looking forward to success in their efforts to raise tho necessary amount to enable the library to be opened in the coming financial year.
