...trader the auspices of the Island Bay-Berh'ampore .branch of the League, of Mothers an inaugural meeting of young women of 16 years and over was held in the Masonic Hall, Island Bay, on Tuesday evening to form a subsidi-i ary branch of--.the League of Mothers,' the name of which would be decided .upon at the Dominion Conference of the League, to be held later in the year. Mrs. Hindmarsh presided over an attendance of nearly sixty girlaj and the league committee were the hostesses for the evening. The meeting opened with prayer, followed by. a. pianoforte' sojo by Miss 6. Hcnrieksen. Mrs. Cook led a community sing, and Miss J. Mc'Hutchon rendered a vocal solo. Dr. Sylvia Chapman gave a most interesting address helping the girls to realise the influence they wield in their homes, whether the homes were their own or those of their parents or guardians. They should, she.said, study to make themselves useful and efficient both in the home and in the community; they should realise their responsibility to other people and to other people's homes, and they should take an interest hi the lives and characteristics of people living in lands over the seas, and thus help to create an atmosphere of love and fellowship to all mankind. . ■ . On behalf of the meeting, Mrs. Hindmarsh extended to Dr. Chapman a vote of appreciation and "thanks. She then explained to those present the objects of the league, saying that it had a religious basis, but was non-sectarian, non-political, and ••; non-controversial, and that they would, have lectures on health topics, home nursing, arts and crafts, physical culture, and any other subject they might desire. After discussion, Miss H. Gibbs proposed that, a branch be formed. This was seconded by Miss Inkster and carried unanimously. The following provisional committee was elected:—President, Mrs. Hindmarsh; secretary, Miss H. Gibbs; treasurer, Miss J. McHutchon committeo, Misses N. Mason, O. Deamon, J. Whij:eford, E. Spenee, M. Preston, D. Palmer, and M. Wildernoff. The subscription will be Is per annum, and meetings will be held every month. Next month a social will be held.
