FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
TRANS-TASMAN TRADE
EXPERTS AND EMBARGOES
CANBERRA, June 20,
The; resumption of trade in fresh fruit and vegetables between Australia and New Zealand is'recommended by the conference of experts at Canberra.
The conference decided.that imports of apples from New Zealand be subject to certification by Dominion authorities that the; fruit is from uninfeeted orchards. Without practical risk the knowledge now available of powdery scab is sufficient to justify the Commonwealth's" lifting of the prohibition of the importation of New Zealand potatoes. Conference accordingly recommends that course. «
It was also agreed that, 'subject to certification by the Departments' of Agriculture of the various States, the importation of citrus fruits by, New Zealand might be resumed without risk of the introduction of fruit fiy. These- decisions, said the Federal Minister of Health, Major C. W. Marr, which were based on scientific evidence, would be submitted to the Governments of New Zealand and Australia for approval before any action was taken.
' Dr. G. H. Cunningham, New Zealand Government Mycologist, represented New Zealand in the discussions with Federal and State agricultural and quarantine experts.
