LARWOOD AND LANCASHIRE

■ LONDON, June' 19. ' W. R. Hammond celebrated • his thirty-first birthday by registering-his second century since the first Test. For Gloucestershire against Essex 'he scored 104 not out in -63minutes, hitting one 0 and twenty .four 4's. He-showed little evidence of the strain wliich had previously been troubling him. Many other century scores were registered, and in. some cases two were recorded in an innings. The scoring; generally was heavj-j but in spite of this scveraliof the bowlers-did well. Mitchell, dropped from the Test team, took eleven wickets . for Derbyshire. Although Larwood (six for 51) and Voee (four for 49) disposed of Lancashire cheaply in the first innings, Nottinghamshire, were beaten in the match by 101 runs, Larwood taking, only three for 85 in. Lancashire's second innings, declared closed with seven wickets down. Leyland did well- with bat and ball for Yorkshire, Ames made another century for Kent, and Nichols bowled with success for Essex. ■
